Pensé que sería bueno usarlos para enviar un mensaje positivo considerando que es algo que verán todos los días. So, we need to remember there are many ways to help. We can donate to our local anti-racist organizations (I linked a few from Dominican Republic), sign petitions, share posts on social media, but most importantly, EDUCATE OURSELVES AND OTHERS. Changing our own context starts from within. With ourselves, and then with our family members, and then with our close friends, and so on... We didn't choose to be raised in a family or society with racist and discriminatory ideals, but we do have the chance to change that!

It's been a while. Sorry I have neglected this blog a little bit. Somehow I felt like coming back today with something fresh and new. Let me tell you all about it. Grab a cup of tea, please.
Last year was incredibly good for me as an artist. I got the chance to work on several amazing projects and for once I could picture out myself as a full time illustrator without the terrible anxiety that causes me not knowing wether or not I'll be able to pay the bills every month.
While I was managing to keep a balance between life and work, there was a very important part that I was neglecting: my presence on social media.
So, here's the thing, guys... I love my job as a children's illustrator. It is amazing to be able to tell stories of all kinds for kids and somehow connect with my inner child and let the imagination run wild, but there is also other things I like. I love interacting with people and by that I mean, a community of people I can interchange knowledge, resources, experiences and emotions with. I like creating my own stuff. Youtube videos, zines, challenges, merchandise, comics... I love all those things and while I was super busy working for others (which I am not complaining about, just saying I sort of lost the balance there), I had little to zero time for my own stuff and as a consequence, my online presence is now like seven feet underground. xD
As a response to that, this year (actually in the middle of COVID-19 Quarantine) I decided to just go for it and start my own drawing challenge. I have things to improve and habits to create, so daily drawings were the perfect approach. Here I am going to show you a part of the first 30 days and also share the prompt list I created.

I made this coloring sheet a while ago as a part of a coloring book I plan to release in the upcoming months, so here I give away a little piece of it. Since mid December I was trying to put my thoughts together and write something cool, but nothing came up out my mind.
2017 was hard. I felt like I was really missing out, experienced loneliness at the deepest point and felt like crap in general. Good things happened, of course. but you know. We tent to dismiss those pretty little things and go crazy around stupid negative situations. Humans!
Hola. Ha llovido mucho, hu? He comenzado a escribir esta entrada como tres veces. En serio. Desde mediados de Diciembre estuve intentando organizar mis pensamientos, ideas y escribir algo bonito, pero nada me parecía interesante y nunca escribí algo relevante.
So, regarding the positive things about last year I have to mention that I got my first in-house job as an illustrator. I'm currently working for a local editorial illustrating content for a children magazine and it makes me happy. The only problem is, that I am not able to use my art style at all since they already have a personality for the brand, so I had to attach my skills to their necessities. Its not a big deal, but I was hoping something slightly different.
Also, I lost track of my art (and this time I was about to quit art forever). I can count with one hand the times I have had art blocks and stuff. I rarely find myself in a limbo in terms of art. My curious mind is always searching new stuff so my hands can always have something fun to draw. That's for sure. But, last year I experienced the longest, most terrible, depressive and heart breaking art block of my life. Guys, I was highly considering quitting art forever. Fore real.
It was a nightmare. After months, I decided to make some time gaps every Saturday to draw and there it began. I grabbed a pencil, sketchbook over the desk, but zero ideas. Not even a stroke, not even a scribble. It felt really awful having the disposition to do something but no idea of where to begin. I cried, guys. Art is very important to me and being there just staring at a blank paper was hard. I tried drawing the things I used to draw, like witches, elves, wizards, flowers and stuff, but I felt so disconnected that I didn't feel like it was actually something I´d like to draw. I had to start again. I had to start a process of rediscovering myself, of exploring and experimenting so I could bild it up again. I am still working on it at the moment, and honestly was one of the best things that could ever happened to me. Odd. I know. :)
Y bueno. Hablando de todas esas cosas lindas del año pasado tengo que mencionar algunas que de verdad hicieron el 2017 menos terrible. Obtuve mi primer trabajo como ilustradora. Actualmente estoy trabajando para una editorial local ilustrando contenido para una revista infantil y la verdad me hace muy feliz. El único problema es, que en realidad no es la gran cosa pero bueno, es que tuve que ajustar mi estilo para poder adaptarme a la personalidad de la marca. No es que el mundo se vaya a acabar, pero eso me ha resultado incómodo porque tengo que rehacer algunas piezas para poder subirlas a mi portafolio. También, le perdí el rastro a mi estilo, a mi técnica, a todo; y les juro que esta vez estuve a punto de dejarlo para siempre. Los bloqueos artísticos no se dan mucho. Rara vez no encuentro qué dibujar, pues esta men te curiosa mía siempre está en búsqueda y así siempre tener ideas para dibujar. Eso no es problema. Pero, el año pasado experimenté el más lardo, terrible, depresivo e hiriente bloqueo de todo mi vida. Señores... lloré! lol Y de verdad no dejaba de pensar en dejarlo todo y vender Avon o Europiel.
Fue una pesadilla. Después de meses decidí apartar tiempo Sábado para dibujar y así comenzar de nuevo a encontrar mi arte (y a mí, también). Agarré mis lápices, libreta sobre la mesa, nada de ideas. Ni una línea, ni un garabato. Me sentí fatal teniendo el deseo de hacer algo pero ni puta idea de qué hacer o dónde comenzar. Lloraba mucho (qué ñoña soy). El arte es muy importante para mí, y estar ahí mirando una página en blanco sin poder hacer mucho no fue nada gracioso. Intenté dibujar las cosas que usualmente me gustan como brujas, elfos, magos, flores y cosas así pero estaba tan desconectada que ni siquiera sentir que era algo que me gustara genuinamente. Tuve que empezar todo de cero. Comenzar un proceso de redescubrimiento y experimentación y exploración y así poder construirlo todo de nuevo. Sigo trabajando en ello, por cierto; y honestamente fue lo mejor que me pudo haber pasado. Suena extraño. Lo sé.
I opened my shop. I have always wanted to have a shop, to make my products and make people smile with them. Cute little pieces of paper. I got an etsy account, created my designs and went through a magical creative process that I enjoyed a lot. I launched my shop and it was nice at first, but then I got the job and could not keep with order so I had to close it.
Abrí mi tienda. Siempre quise tener una tiendita, crear productos y hacer sonreír a la gente con ello. Pequeños y lindos pedacitos de papel. Abrí una cuenta en Etsy, diseñé mis productos y de pronto estaba en un hermoso proceso creativo que disfruté de principio a fin. Hice el lanzamiento and fue genial al principio, peor luego comencé a trabajar y todo se fue a la porra. No podía manejar ambas cosas con tan poco tiempo.
Also my first book. Not mine at all, of course. Keralynn Stinchcomb reached me out on Instagram and asked me to illustrate her first children book. I Speak Life is the tittle of her debut as a children author and it's all about Holleigh, her daughter, who is a little brave and empowering girl with a bright and positive life. I had a lot of fun working on this project and it just made me realize how much I love my job. I hope I can show you an actual footage of the process behind. It would be nice.
I visited the Botanical Garden to a point that girl in the entrance selling the tickets knows me very well. Also the bus driver and I think the tortoises at the Japanese Garden. I think the Botanical garden is the quiet place to be in Santo Domingo. Is the place I want to live next to, the perfect spot to spend a whole day, the place I would take a guy to a date, to be honest. Its perfect! Maybe they should look after some areas that seem a little bit neglected, but that just me.
Otra cosa que el 2017 trajo, fue mi primer libro. No es mío totalmente, claro está. Keralynn Stinchcomb me contactó por Instagram y me pidió que ilustrara su libro debut infantil. I Speak Life es tl titulo y es sobre su pequeña hija Holleigh, quien es una niña super adorable, muy valiente y empedrada. Me divertí mucho durante todo el proceso y me hizo darme cuenta de lo mucho que amo mi trabajo. Espero poder mostrarles pronto todo el proceso de creación. Sería genial. Visité el Jardín Botánico tantas veces, que la chica que vende las entradas ya me conoce bien. También el señor del autobús y una tortuga del Jardín Japonés. Creo que ese lugar es lo más tranquilo y pacífico en todo Santo Domingo. Es justo el lugar del que quisiera vivir cerquita, el punto perfecto para pasar un día completo y donde llevaría una cita, y eso es bien cursi pero no me importa. ES PERFECTO. Aú así pienso que hay algunas áreas descuidas (buh).
I met new people. Not many, to be honest, but they are really nice and cool and that's what I care about. I have never met them IRL, but they are real and I am eternally grateful for having them in my life. Many of them are artist, and we have shared a lot so far. Also we have sent care packages to each other a few times and it was amazing. Kristin Askland, Amy Lou, Aleema, Andrea Arce, Silvana Chibi, Diorella, Emilie Skargard are only a few of them. My christmas holidays were stressful. Since I had only a few days off from work I had to manage to be in San Juan with my family and also be here in Santo Domingo to work. You can imagine how tiring these days were, but I got a lot of fun. I missed San Juan like crazy and being there with mom, dad, grandma, and a few good friends, meant everything to me. But I am considering to stay here this year.
Conocí nueva gente. No muchos, para ser sincera, pero son realmente geniales y buena onda y eso es todo lo que me importa. Nunca los he conocido en vida real, pero son reales y estoy eternamente agradecida por tenerlos en mi vida. Muchos de ellos son artistas y hemos compartido muchas cosas hasta ahora. También hemos intercambiado regalos un par de veces y fue muy divertido. Kristin Askland, Amy Lou, Aleema, Andrea Arce, Silvana Chibi, Diorella, Emilie Skargard son algunos de ellos. I know it's late for this but I don't care. This year resolutions include taking care of myself. Oh god. Again. Also, I want to get my first tattoo, which might be a loaf of fresh artisan bread. I need to learn how to take care of plants, because I bought a baby pine and after a few weeks it died. I'm the worst. Finally, I would really like to make a webcomic, but that's on debate to be honest because I like animation a lot and I would really like to take my first steps into it. So, let's see.

Ya sé que es muy tarde para hablar sobre esto peor no me importa. Este año tengo nuevas resoluciones y eso incluye cuidar de mi. Dios. De nuevo. Aquí vamos. También quiero hacerme mi primer tatuaje, el cual podría ser una baguette de pan fresco. Necesito aprender a cuidar de las plantas, porque la última que compré (un bebé pino criollo) murió después de un par de semanas. Soy de lo peor. Finalmente, me encantaría poder hacer un web comic, pero eso esta en veremos, la verdad; ya que me gusta mucho la animación y me gustarīa incursionar en ella. No parece algo muy difícil. For this character study I decided to shade with Ecoline pastel purple and a bit of water. I like how it turned out and how nice combine with the earthy tones.
Para este personaje decidí hacer las sombras con Ecoline en tono púrpura pastel un poco diluida. Me gusta el resultado y lo bien que combina con los tonos tierra.
This baby was an experiment I made using Winsor and Newton Ink. I spend hours with these ladies and loved every single second. I had to apply several layers to get a decent contrast. For the outline I used a Facer Castell Polychromo pencil in black.
Este beibi xD fue un experimento que hice con tinta china Winsor and Newton. Duré hora en eso y amé cada segundo de ello. Tuve que aplicar varias capas para poder obtener contraste. Para el delineado usé un lápiz policromo Faber Castell en color negro.
These little guys were part of a practice. The more I learn about watercolors, color in general and shading, the more I fall in love with traditional art.
You might be wondering why there is no digital work on this list, right? I am using traditional art to sooth my stress post work, to be honest. It is working pretty well, so far. SO I think i'll keep the habit. :)
Estos pequeñines fueron parte de una práctica. Mientras más aprendo sobre acuarela y color en general, más me enamoro del arte tradicional. It's been a while since the last time I posted something in this blog, so you probably do not even remember my name. Well, I'm Nat. And today I'm gonna show you what I usually do when I finally decide to go out.
I remember when my mom bought an encyclopedias set. Geography and Botanics were my favorite ones. I used to spend hours flipping through the pages, learning about plants and pointing places over the maps I promised myself I´d visit some day. I still keep those in my shelf and I would like to read them again.
Well. A few weeks ago I went to the National Botanical Garden. It was the very first time I visited that place and I decided to film my adventure and draw something springish inspired by the ambient there.
I packed my camera, wallet, sketchbook and pencil case, then took the bus and 30 minutes later I was in front of the NBG.
These first two illustrations (actually sketches for upcoming digitals pieces) were made inspired in the two things that I enjoyed the most there. I visited the Nursery Garden and The Ferns Pavilion.
Also, I was able to visit the Butterflies Pavilion and OMG! many caterpillars and cocoons! I loved that place. (have to point out that when I was a kid I used to fear caterpillars)
I stopped by the Japanese Garden. It´s beautiful!
Finally I decided to sit on the grass, enjoy some sparkling water and draw.
Notes
The color palette I used for my sketches is basically an interpretation of what saw there. Lots of green, yellowish green, olive and brown.
I was a little worried about the outlining. I was thinking about using color pencils or black multiliners, but then I tried on the first page with sepia and I fell in love. It matches beautifully with the palette and concept.
The Gardener illustration (the first one) is a print now. I made a digital version but also filmed the process and it will be on my Youtube channel soon. (and in my shop too)
The materials I used: Canson Mix Media sketchbook, Faber Castell Color Pencils, Copic Multiliner in sepia, Winsor and Newton watercolor.

Abril es hermoso. No es por nada que nací un día como hoy. Amo mi mes con locura y sobre todo amo estar en en San Juan para estas fechas.
El clima es muy agradable aquí. Siempre lo he dicho y es porque en efecto, el sol no es molesto como en otras zonas del país. Siempre está esa brisita cálida por las tardes, por las noches brisa fría y el cielo no está pelao' como en las grandes ciudades. Se pueden apreciar las estrellas, ver las montañas, y muuuuuchos árboles y flores lindas. Sí. Lo sé. Es perfecto aquí. :3

Bienvenidos a otra entrega de una semana en dibujos. No sé en qué momento esto se volvió algo relevante, pero a veces pasa que algo común comienza a tomar carácter. Y bueno, desde hace algunas semanas de manera inconsciente noté que cada domingo me sentaba todo el día en mi escritorio a dibujar como loca. Los domingos son días muy relajados y en cierto modo aburridos, pero esta nueva costumbre me ha hecho cambiar esa idea y he tomado este último día de la semana para dedicarlo a mí, estar conmigo y dibujar para mí.
Sin más ni menos, aquí les muestro algunos bocetos recientes que pude terminar mientras quemaba el playlist de Mumford And Sons y The Lumineers (amo a esa gente). No sé si ya les había contado esto, pero una de las técnicas tradicionales que más me ha encantado es la combinación acuarela y lápiz de color. Siento que todo adquiere un nivel de detalle único con los lápices de colores y es mucho más fácil dar texturas y sombras con ellos. Por mucho tiempo los vi como un recurso muy viejo y simple, pero la verdad ahora no puedo hacer mucho sin ellos. Quién diría.
La foto no le hace justicia. Los colores son más vivos, pero la verdad lo que quiero que vean es el detalle que se logra obtener con los lápices de colores. Ok. Creo que ni eso se puede apreciar bien. Estúpida cámara :p
Practicando animales con acuarela y lápices también. Los animales pueden ser un poco difíciles de dibujar, pues digamos que su anatomía es algo complicada y adaptarla a un estilo de ilustración es mucho más difícil. No estoy ni cerca de una buena interpretación, pero ahí vamos.
Mi página favorita hasta ahora es esta. La razón es simple: usé guache por segunda vez y lo amé. Esta técnica es hermosaaaaaaa, pero tiene sus ganchos. Espero aprender mucho más de ello, pues me veo haciendo muchas cosas con esa técnica en un futuro. Una de las notas que tomé fue que los colores tienden a oscurecer con facilidad. Agregar una pizca de negro a un ``pegote´´ de color blanco puede ser catastrófico! haha
Este es un poco más viejo. Trataba de sólo usar lápiz grafito. Usé un 2B Staedtler, pero luego conseguí un lumograph de la misma marca en 4B y es genial. Una punta más suave siempre es buena opción.

Esta ha sido mi primera segunda semana de clases, y a pesar de que sólo voy dos veces por semana a la uni, me llevo mis libretas para pasar el rato en lo que espero mis clases.
Estos han sido algunas de las cosas que he dibujado esta semana. Honestamente amo la idea de trabajar fuera de casa. Aquí frente a mi escritorio tengo muchas distracciones que sacan a flote mi flojera para dibujar. Creo que ahora buscaré cualquier pretexto para salir más y así dibujar mucho más.
